Somebody has probably told you to use non-bio. A midwife, a mother-in-law, a friend with strong opinions about eczema. You nodded, bought the bottle with non-bio on the label, and moved on. If you later wondered what you actually agreed to, the label is no help. Every detergent on a British or Irish shelf declares itself bio or non-bio as though the distinction were self-evident. It isn't. It comes down to one class of ingredient, and it matters less often, and differently, than the folklore suggests.
The entire difference is one ingredient
Biological detergents contain enzymes. Non-biological detergents don't. That is the whole distinction.
Enzymes are proteins that break down specific kinds of molecule, the same class of machinery your own digestion uses. In a detergent they act as stain specialists: proteases work on protein stains like blood, egg, sweat and grass; amylases on starches; lipases on fats. They chop large, insoluble stain molecules into smaller fragments that wash away easily.
Everything else in the two formulas can be identical. The surfactants that do the bulk of the cleaning, the water softeners, the fragrance, all of it can be the same. So the honest definition is this: non-bio laundry detergent cleans with surfactants alone, rather than surfactants plus enzymes.
A useful way to hold it in your head: surfactants are generalists. They loosen the grip of dirt and oil on fabric so water can carry it off, and they do this to everything, indiscriminately. Enzymes are specialists, brought in for biological stains in particular, and they earn their keep most at low temperatures, where chemistry is slower. Remove the specialists and you lose ground on exactly those stains. Nothing else changes.
A peculiarly British and Irish argument
In most of the world this labelling doesn't exist. Detergents across Europe and North America routinely contain enzymes and nobody prints a word about it on the front. The bio versus non-bio divide is a UK and Irish retail convention, built on a decades-old belief that enzymes irritate skin.
It's worth being straight about the evidence, since we sell a non-bio product and could profit from leaving the folklore alone. Dermatological research has repeatedly struggled to show that the enzymes in laundry detergent cause skin irritation or allergy at the tiny doses left on fabric after rinsing. The ingredients with a stronger claim to irritating skin are elsewhere in the bottle: fragrance, preservatives, dyes and optical brighteners, plus plain overdosing, which leaves residue of everything in the weave.
None of which makes choosing non-bio irrational. A non-bio formula is usually a shorter ingredient list, and if your household includes reactive skin, a shorter list is a sensible starting point. Just don't treat the badge as a guarantee. A heavily perfumed, dyed non-bio can be harder on skin than a restrained biological one. Read the whole label, not the front of it.
What's actually in a non-bio formula
Mostly surfactants. As a concrete example, here is our own detergent sheet by weight, from the supplier's safety data sheet: sodium dodecyl sulfate at 58 percent and a fatty alcohol polyglycol ether at 17 percent, which are the two surfactants; polyvinyl alcohol at 15 percent, the dissolvable film that holds the sheet together (we've written a full explainer on PVA if you want the detail); water at 9 percent; and fragrance at 1 percent. No enzymes.
Also no bleaches, no phosphates, no optical brighteners and no dyes. For skin, that second list arguably matters more than the absence of enzymes, because brighteners and dyes are designed to stay on fabric after the rinse. Enzymes, by contrast, mostly leave with the water.
Where non-bio honestly loses, and how to close the gap
Protein and fat stains at low temperatures. On dried blood, egg, formula milk or grass, a biological detergent at 30 degrees has the edge, because that is precisely what the enzymes are for.
That's a concession, not a verdict, because no detergent in any format reliably shifts a set-in stain unaided, enzymes included. Ask anyone who has washed grass-stained sports kit with a premium bio and pulled it out still green. The gap closes with thirty seconds of habit. Rinse blood in cold water before it dries. For anything protein-heavy, pre-treat: with our sheets, dampen a corner, rub it directly into the stain, leave it a few minutes, then wash as normal. That puts concentrated detergent exactly where the stain is, instead of diluting one dose across forty litres of water, and it does more for a bad stain than switching detergent type ever will. Wash genuinely soiled loads a notch warmer and the enzyme advantage largely evaporates.
Where it makes no difference at all
Most washing. The typical load isn't stained, it's worn: a day of skin, sweat and city air. Surfactants handle that on their own, which is why non-bio users don't spend their lives surrounded by grey laundry. Non-bio works on whites, colours and darks alike, and ours runs at 30 to 60 degrees, in cold water and in a hand-wash basin.
