You can buy laundry detergent for thirty years without ever needing to know what it is. Then somebody hands you a dry sheet the size of a postcard, tells you it replaces a two-litre bottle, and suddenly the question matters. If the sheet is real detergent, the claim is plausible. If it is not, you are about to ruin a load of washing. So it is worth ten minutes to know what detergent actually is.
Not soap, and the difference is why old washing went grey
Soap is the older technology by a few thousand years: fats or oils reacted with an alkali. It cleans, but it has a flaw that anyone who has lived in a hard-water area has seen. Soap reacts with the calcium and magnesium dissolved in hard water and forms scum, which settles back onto fabric. Wash after wash, whites turn grey and towels turn stiff.
Detergents are synthetic cleaning agents developed in the twentieth century to get around exactly that problem. They do the same job as soap without binding to hard-water minerals, so nothing precipitates onto your clothes. That is the whole reason detergent exists, and it is why nobody washes clothes with a bar of soap any more unless they have to.
One kind of molecule does nearly all the work
The working part of any detergent is the surfactant: a molecule with one end that bonds to water and one end that bonds to grease. The grease-loving tail embeds itself in the oil on your collar, the water-loving head stays out in the wash water, and the agitation of the drum pulls the whole assembly off the fabric. The surfactants then surround the loosened grease in tiny clusters that stay suspended in the water until the rinse carries them away.
That mechanism is the same whether the detergent arrives as powder, liquid, a pod or a sheet. Everything else in the product exists to support it, preserve it, or make it look nicer.
What the rest of the bottle is doing
A typical modern detergent adds some or all of the following around its surfactants: builders that soften the wash water so the surfactants work better; enzymes, in biological products, which digest protein and starch stains; optical brighteners, which are dyes that make whites look whiter without cleaning anything; bleaching agents in some powders; fragrance; preservatives; and, in liquids, water. A great deal of water. Look at a bottle of laundry liquid and water is usually the first ingredient listed, because it is the largest. It cleans nothing. It is the delivery medium, and you pay to ship it, lift it and store it.
Pods were the first serious attempt to fix that. They concentrated the liquid and wrapped it in a dissolvable film, which solved the dosing problem. But they kept the plastic tub, and the pod itself is still a liquid product at heart. Sheets are the more recent step: take the water out entirely and press what remains into a dry strip.
So what is a detergent sheet?
A detergent sheet is detergent with the water removed, held in a carrier film that dissolves in the wash. Ours, by weight, from the supplier's safety data sheet: sodium dodecyl sulfate 58%, fatty alcohol polyglycol ether 17%, polyvinyl alcohol 15%, water 9%, fragrance 1%. No enzymes, so it is a non-bio detergent. No bleach, no phosphates, no optical brighteners, no dyes.
Three honest notes on that list, because a definition article should define the awkward parts too. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is better known as SLS, and at concentration it is a recognised irritant; in use it is heavily diluted across a full drum of water. The polyvinyl alcohol is the carrier film, which means the sheet is 15% PVA and is not a plastic-free product; we have written about what PVA is and how it is used separately. And the 1% fragrance means there is currently no fragrance-free version of our sheet.
On biodegradability: the surfactants in our sheets reached 99.8% biodegradation within 7 days under GB/T 15818-2018 testing (Guangdong Detection Center of Microbiology, December 2021). That testing covered the surfactants, not the PVA carrier.
The practical spec is simple: one sheet per full load, torn along the perforation; works from cold up to 60°C; fine in front loaders, top loaders and HE machines; safe for septic tanks; vegan and cruelty-free; suitable for whites, colours and darks.
The fair question: can a dry strip actually clean?
The doubt usually rests on weight. A sheet weighs a few grams; a bottle weighs two kilos; surely the bottle contains more cleaning. But most of the bottle is water. Measured on the molecule that does the work, the sheet is not thin at all. It is the concentrated part of the bottle with the padding removed.
One genuine concession: on protein stains such as blood, grass and egg, the enzymes in bio detergents have a real edge. If a stain has set, the answer with a sheet is to tear off a corner, wet it, and rub it directly into the stain before the wash. Pre-treating like that shifts marks that no detergent of any format reliably removes from inside the drum. On the ordinary run of washing, which is most washing, the sheet does the same job as the bottle without the dosing guesswork or the jug in your cupboard.
If you tried sheets and got residue
Undissolved streaks are a loading error, not a chemistry failure. The sheet goes into the empty drum first, with the laundry placed on top. It does not go in the detergent drawer, which is engineered to flush liquid or powder through with water and will not dissolve a sheet properly. It does not go on top of a full load, where it cannot reach the water. The other cause is overloading: a drum packed tight leaves no room for water to circulate.
