You are at the machine with the box in your hand, and at the back of your mind sits a low, unresolved hum: where does all this actually end up? Not enough to stop you. Just enough that the eco-labelled option looks more appealing next time.
It deserves a better answer than either side gives. The green brands want you picturing a poisoned river. The big brands want you picturing nothing at all. Neither is right.
The thing that actually made detergent bad
For decades there was a real, measurable problem with a name: phosphates. They softened hard water and made detergent work better, and they were also, chemically speaking, fertiliser. Sent down the drain in bulk they fed algal blooms that stripped rivers and lakes of oxygen. Laundry detergent was a genuine contributor to eutrophication.
That era is largely over. The EU capped phosphorus in consumer laundry detergent at 0.5 grams per wash from mid-2013 under Regulation (EU) No 259/2012, and the industry reformulated around it. If your mental image of detergent's harm is a dead lake, you are picturing a problem legislated away more than a decade ago. That changes the question rather than closing it. What is left is smaller and duller.
What is still going down the drain
Surfactants. The molecules that do the cleaning - one end grips grease, the other grips water, and the two get pulled apart. Modern ones are designed to break down at wastewater treatment. Ours tested at 99.8% biodegradation over seven days under GB/T 15818-2018 (Guangdong Detection Center of Microbiology, December 2021). Be precise about what that covers: the surfactants, not the whole sheet.
Things built not to rinse out. Optical brighteners are the clearest case. They clean nothing - they are dyes that cling through the rinse and fluoresce faintly blue in daylight, so your whites read as whiter than they are. Persisting is the entire function of the ingredient. One rule of thumb: be warier of what is engineered to stay on the cloth than of what washes off it.
Fibres. Every wash sheds microscopic fibres from synthetic clothing. Real, and significant - but it comes from your clothes, not your detergent. Whether the sheet itself contributes is answered at length in do laundry sheets contain microplastics.
The finding that undercuts most detergent marketing, ours included
On a typical wash, the detergent is not the largest environmental cost. The electricity is, and the bulk of that goes into heating water rather than turning the drum. It is why the Energy Saving Trust's guidance on saving energy with your washing machine leads with temperature, and why EU Ecodesign rules have required a 20-degree option on new machines since 2013. So the order that actually reduces your laundry footprint is:
- Wash cooler. This is the large one, and nearly free.
- Wash full loads, and fewer of them.
- Skip the tumble dryer when weather allows.
- Then think about the detergent.

So does the choice matter at all?
It does, for narrower reasons than the marketing suggests. A bottle of laundry liquid is mostly water: you are paying to freight water, in a plastic jug, to a building already plumbed into the mains. Take the water out and what is left fits through a letterbox. Ours arrives in kraft paper.
The second difference is what is not in the wastewater: no bleaches, no phosphates, no optical brighteners, no dyes. It is non-bio, vegan and cruelty-free, and passed EU RoHS testing (SGS, March 2023). Absences rather than achievements - but absences are what you want here.
The awkward parts, from us rather than from a review
An audit that concedes nothing is an advertisement:
The sheet is not plastic-free. It is 15% polyvinyl alcohol, which is what holds a dry sheet together until water hits it. We will not call this plastic-free or plant-based, because it is neither. For the full picture, we wrote a deep explainer on PVA in laundry.
The biodegradation testing does not cover the PVA. The 99.8% figure is a surfactant test. We hold no product data on what our PVA does once it leaves the drum, so we make no claims about it and do not describe the sheet as 100% biodegradable.
The main surfactant is an irritant at concentration. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is 58% of the sheet by weight - better known as SLS, and a recognised irritant at concentration. In use it is diluted across a full drum and rinsed away, a very different exposure. But diluted is not absent, and you are entitled to the number.
There is 1% fragrance and no fragrance-free version. If fragrance is a dealbreaker, we do not currently have a variant that solves it.
Full list by weight: sodium dodecyl sulfate 58%, fatty alcohol polyglycol ether 17%, polyvinyl alcohol 15%, water 9%, parfum 1%. No enzymes.
The two objections that actually stop people switching
"A dry strip can't clean as well as what I use now." On an ordinary load there is no gap worth measuring - same class of surfactant, same job, same drum of water. Pods hold one genuine edge: a concentrated gel core hits a set-in stain harder than a dry sheet. The workaround takes ten seconds - tear off a corner, wet it, rub it into the mark before the wash. That beats a pod, which cannot be applied to a spot at all. And no format shifts a set stain unaided.
"I tried sheets and got white residue." A loading error, not a formula problem, and nearly always one of two things: the sheet went into the detergent drawer, or it went in on top of a full load. It belongs in the empty drum, first, before the clothes - it needs direct contact with water and room to tumble, and a drawer gives it neither. The other cause is overloading. As the Energy Saving Trust puts it, water and detergent need to circulate and clothes need to move around.

Is laundry detergent bad for the environment?
Less than it used to be. The phosphates that drove algal blooms were capped in EU consumer laundry detergent from 2013. What remains is narrower - additives designed to persist on fabric, packaging and shipping weight - and on a typical wash the detergent is outweighed by the energy used to heat the water.
Are laundry detergent sheets better for the environment than liquid?
