Every format in the detergent aisle now claims to be green. The bottle is "eco", the pod is "planet-friendly", and the newest arrival - a dry sheet in a paper envelope - makes the boldest claims of all. If your instinct says most of this is marketing, your instinct is mostly right. "Eco" is not a regulated word, and the laundry aisle is where vague environmental language goes to thrive.
We sell laundry sheets, so read what follows knowing that. This is the audit we would want to read before buying: what is actually different about sheets, which parts can be proven, and which parts honestly can't.
"Better for the environment" is really four separate questions: what goes down your drain, what the product is made of, what it ships in, and how it changes the way you wash. They get different answers, and not all of them are comfortable.
Start at the drain, because that's where every wash ends up
Whatever detergent you buy, the whole dose leaves your machine as wastewater, so start there.
The surfactants in our sheets - the cleaning agents that do the actual work - were tested at 99.8% biodegradation after seven days under GB/T 15818-2018 (Guangdong Detection Center of Microbiology, December 2021). In plain terms, the cleaning chemistry breaks down in days rather than lingering in waterways. The formula also leaves out the ingredients with the worst after-lives: no phosphates, which feed algal blooms; no optical brighteners, which are designed to survive the wash and persist; no bleaches; no dyes. The sheets are septic-safe, which matters in much of rural Ireland, where the septic tank is the wastewater treatment plant.
Now the limit of that claim. The test covered the surfactants, not every ingredient in the sheet. Other sheet brands say "100% biodegradable"; we don't, because the testing we hold doesn't support a claim about the whole sheet. If a brand makes the bigger claim, ask what test sits behind it.
The awkward ingredient is the one holding the sheet together
A detergent sheet needs something to make it a sheet. In ours that is polyvinyl alcohol - PVA - at 15% by weight. PVA is a water-soluble synthetic polymer, the same family of material that forms the film around every laundry pod on the shelf.
Two things follow. First, a PVA-based sheet is not "plastic-free", and any brand selling one under that label is over-claiming. Second, we do not hold product-specific data on how the PVA in our sheets behaves once it dissolves into wastewater, so we won't make a claim in either direction. What the PVA question cannot do is settle the choice between formats, because pods carry the same polymer in their film. What differs is everything around it. A pod is surfactant suspended in liquid, wrapped in PVA film, sold in a rigid plastic tub, in one fixed dose. Pods solved the dosing mess of liquid - and kept the plastic. The part no lab tests: what it arrives in
Liquid detergent is mostly water. Buying it means paying to ship water around the country in a plastic bottle, and pods swap the bottle for a plastic tub. A pack of 60 sheets is dry, light and flat, and comes in a kraft paper envelope.
This is normally where an eco brand prints a big number: bottles saved, CO2 avoided. We're not going to - we haven't done the lifecycle analysis to stand behind one, and unverifiable numbers are what this article exists to complain about. The facts don't need decoration: paper instead of a bottle, a dry sheet instead of a litre of mostly water.
The biggest lever was never the detergent anyway
Most of the environmental cost of a load of washing is heating the water. The greenest thing a detergent can do is clean properly at low temperatures, so the cool cycle becomes a real option rather than a compromise. Our sheets work from 30 to 60 degrees, in cold water, and for hand washing, across front loaders, top loaders and HE machines.
The second lever is dose. Detergent poured freehand tends to be detergent overdosed, and everything overdosed goes down the drain having cleaned nothing. A sheet is one dose for a full load, and it's perforated, so a half load gets half a sheet. The guesswork - and the quiet overpouring that goes with it - disappears.
None of this matters if it doesn't clean
Here is the doubt most people actually have: a thin dry strip does not look like it can do what a pod does, and an eco product that fails gets replaced by whatever works. Two honest answers.
On everyday washing, the sheet's surfactants do the same job a pod's do. On set-in stains, no format shifts them unaided - not pods, not liquid, not powder, not sheets. That fight is won at pre-treatment, and sheets have a useful trick here: wet a corner of the sheet and rub it directly into the stain before the wash. Pouring liquid straight onto a stain is marginally handier - and the damp corner does the same job without a capful of guesswork.
And if you tried sheets before and found chalky residue, that was almost certainly a loading error, not the format failing. The sheet goes into the empty drum first, clothes on top - never the detergent drawer, never thrown on top of a full load. A machine stuffed to the door will leave residue with any detergent. Empty drum first, room for the wash to move, and the problem goes away.
So - are they better for the environment?
On everything that can be measured or seen - tested surfactant biodegradation, no phosphates or optical brighteners, septic-safe, paper packaging instead of bottles and tubs, full performance at low temperatures, dose control built into the format - yes, sheets come out ahead of bottled liquid and plastic-tubbed pods. On PVA, sheets and pods share the same open question, and anyone who tells you it's settled, in either direction, is ahead of the evidence.
