The cycle has finished, you have opened the drawer for something else, and there it is: a pool of softener sitting in the small compartment, exactly where you poured it an hour ago. Or the opposite - that compartment is dry every time, the towels come out flat, and you have no idea whether the machine ever used it.
Same mechanism, failing in two directions. That compartment is the only part of the drawer that does not simply drain.
The small one with the flower on it
Fabric softener goes in the smallest compartment of the detergent drawer, the one marked with a flower symbol - occasionally a star or a clover, depending on who built the machine. On a three-slot drawer it is usually the middle one, and the only compartment with a MAX line printed inside it.
The other two are less mysterious than they look. The compartment marked II, 2 or B is the main wash, where detergent goes on a normal cycle. The one marked I, 1 or A is the pre-wash, and unless you have deliberately selected a pre-wash programme it does nothing at all. Where to put laundry detergent works through all three for every format, if that is the real question underneath this one.
Why that compartment has a MAX line and the others do not
It is not flushed like the rest of the drawer. It holds what you pour in through the entire wash, then releases it at the final rinse - the only point where softener does anything at all. Added at the start, it would simply be washed back out.
It manages that with a siphon: the small plastic cap or standpipe sitting in the compartment. Water enters at the rinse, the level rises above the top of the siphon, and the whole compartment empties in one go. Entirely dependent on the level being right, which is why overfilling breaks it. Pour past the MAX line and the siphon primes immediately, so the softener drains into the drum at the start of the cycle and is rinsed away with the detergent - the load washed in softener and rinsed in nothing, the exact reverse of the intention.
If it is still sitting there at the end of the wash
The siphon is blocked, or the cap is not seated properly on its post. Softener leaves a waxy film behind - that is how it works on fabric, and the dispenser gets the same treatment - so the standpipe eventually furs up enough to stop drawing.
Pull the drawer right out, lift the siphon cap off, and wash both under the hottest tap you have. If it is scaled as well as greasy, half an hour in white vinegar will shift the limescale. Cleaning a washing machine drawer covers the cavity above it too, usually in a worse state and almost never touched.
The part a laundry company is not supposed to say
Softener works by coating fibres in a thin waxy layer. That is the entire mechanism, not a side effect of it. It is also why towels stop absorbing water, why the softener side of the drawer goes grey and slimy while the detergent side only goes crusty, and why residue inside the machine has something to feed on.
So, the honest version. Softener does what it claims: it reduces static, adds scent, makes cotton smoother in the hand. If you like it, use it, and use it in the right compartment. But if you arrived here because your towels have gone stiff or your machine has started to smell, softener is more often part of the cause than the fix. The cheapest experiment available is to stop for a month and see whether you miss it.
Where our own product sits in this
We sell laundry detergent sheets, and we do not make a fabric softener, so none of this routes you towards a second purchase.
A sheet does not go in the drawer at all. It goes into the empty drum first, before the clothes, because it needs water contact and tumbling to dissolve. Putting one in the drawer - or on top of a packed load, where it can end up folded dry inside a duvet cover - accounts for most of the residue complaints you will read about the format. The other doubt is obvious: a thin dry strip cannot clean like a dose of liquid. Fair enough. What is in the sheet is the same surfactant chemistry as what is in the bottle, minus the water it was suspended in. A pod has one real edge, in that its dose is fixed and thoughtless; a sheet answers that with a perforation, so the dose sizes to the load. And on a set-in stain, rubbing a damp corner of the sheet into the mark first beats any pod.
Two things worth volunteering. Our sheets contain 1% fragrance and there is no fragrance-free version yet, so if you are cutting softener because of skin irritation, know that before you switch. And they contain no builder and no water softener - no zeolites, no citrates, no sodium carbonate - so in a hard-water area a built powder holds a real advantage on that point. The workaround is the perforation: tear extra for hard water. Uisce Éireann is blunt that hard water "can also reduce the effectiveness of detergents and soaps, meaning you need to use more", and you can check your own supply by Eircode in fifteen seconds.
If you would rather test that than take it on trust: 30-day money-back guarantee, so if the sheets do not clean as well as what you use now, email us and we refund you. Subscriptions cancel any time by email or live chat, no fees, no notice period. The 60-pack of laundry detergent sheets ships next day in Ireland, two days to the UK.
Questions people actually ask
where do you put fabric softener in a washing machine
Fabric softener goes in the smallest compartment of the detergent drawer, the one marked with a flower symbol, filled only as far as the MAX line printed inside it. The machine holds it there through the wash and releases it automatically at the final rinse, which is the only point where softener does any good.
why is fabric softener still in the drawer after the wash
The siphon is blocked. That small plastic cap or standpipe in the softener compartment is what empties it, drawing the liquid off once the water level rises at the rinse, and softener residue gradually furs it up until it stops working. Pull the drawer out, lift the cap off, wash both in very hot water.
how much fabric softener should i use
Never past the MAX line in the compartment, and usually less than the bottle suggests - around half a capful is plenty for a normal load. Overfilling does not soften anything more. It primes the siphon early, so the softener drains into the drum at the start and is rinsed straight back out.
can you put fabric softener straight in the drum
Not neat, and not at the start. Undiluted softener poured onto fabric leaves greasy marks that take several washes to clear. If your machine has no compartment, use a dispenser ball dropped in with the load, or add softener diluted in a cup of water once the rinse has begun.
do you need fabric softener at all
No. Softener adds scent and reduces static, but it does it by leaving a waxy film on the fibres, which is why towels lose absorbency and why the drawer goes grey and slimy. Skipping it for a month costs nothing and is the quickest way to find out whether you miss it.
